A Mother's Day to Remember: Honoring the Women Who Shaped Us at Bullock Island, Belize

An Island Built on Family Love

The Story Behind the Island: From NBA Dream to Belizean Home

For readers just discovering Bullock Island, a little context helps explain why Mother's Day here carries so much weight.

Bullock Island was founded by
Reggie Bullock, the 11-year NBA veteran and former University of North Carolina standout who played under Coach Roy Williams and twice reached the NCAA Elite Eight before being drafted 25th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2013. Over his career, Reggie wore jerseys for the Clippers, Pistons, Lakers, Knicks, Mavericks, Suns, Raptors and Rockets.

But the chapter that may matter most was written quietly, off the court.

As
Blavity reported in 2023, Reggie first spotted the heart-shaped, five-acre island while scrolling YouTube and immediately knew it was special, fittingly, one of his twin children is named Heart. He purchased the island near Placencia, Belize, with one clear intention: "It was more about generational wealth for me… I was all up for the challenge."

What began as a personal vacation home grew into something much larger. As
Ambergris Today shared in their first-look feature on the island in late 2025, Reggie told viewers, "I didn't want to just buy a mansion. I wanted to build something that could create generational wealth and give back to the community." That spirit, give back, is the same spirit that animates everything we do here, especially on Mother's Day.

Yahoo Life and Basketball Network later detailed how the island officially opened to guests in late 2025 as a boutique resort, complete with a main villa, oceanfront cabanas, an open-air gym, a beach club, a restaurant, a spa, and yes, a full-size basketball court right by the sea. The motto Reggie chose for the island says it all: "Arrive as a tourist. Leave as family."

That is not marketing. On Sunday, May 10, fifty women felt that promise become real.

May 10, 2026: A Sunday of Gratitude

This past Sunday, Reggie Bullock and his team welcomed approximately 50 women to the island for a Mother's Day celebration unlike any other in Belize.

The day was, in a word,
peaceful. The sea was calm. The light was soft. The laughter was easy. And underneath it all was something deeper, a quiet current of gratitude that you could feel the moment you stepped onto the dock.

Reggie had arrived on the island a few days early, not to oversee logistics, but to do something far more personal. He wanted to welcome his own mother to his home on the island first. Before the boats arrived, before the music played, before the guests were greeted with cool drinks and warm hugs, he made sure the woman who gave him life was settled, seen, and celebrated under his roof.

That single gesture set the tone for the entire weekend.

Why Mother's Day Matters in Belize and at Bullock Island

In Belize, family is not a concept. It is the architecture of daily life. Belizean culture is deeply, beautifully family oriented and nowhere is that more visible than in the south, where so many of Bullock Island's team members were born and raised.

The team that brought Mother's Day to life is made up of locals from Southern Belize. Brothers, sons, daughters, nieces, and nephews, all working side by side to honor mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and friends. There were fun games organized for the women: light-hearted, joyful competitions that turned strangers into friends and friends into family. The kind of games that end in tears of laughter and shared snacks.

When you grow up in this part of the world, you learn early that the women in your life are not just caretakers. They are foundations. They are first teachers, first protectors, first cheerleaders, and often the first to sacrifice. Mother's Day at Bullock Island is the team's way of giving even a small part of that back, the same "give back" mindset Reggie has spoken about publicly since the day he announced this island to the world.

Celebrating Belizean Women Entrepreneurs: The Pop-Up Shop

A celebration of women would not be complete without lifting up the women who are building beautiful businesses across Belize. To round out the day, Reggie and his team invited three remarkable women entrepreneurs to host a pop-up shop right on the island, so every guest could take home something meaningful.

Ikoomahair
brought their dedication to natural hair care, sharing products created with love and intention for Belizean women.

Madafaya Hot Sauce
brought the heat:  bold, locally crafted flavor in a bottle, the kind of sauce that turns an ordinary plate into a story.

Juanita's Mayan Handmade Arts & Crafts
brought tradition, color, and craftsmanship, each piece a quiet act of cultural preservation, hand-shaped by a woman keeping ancestral artistry alive.

Together, these three Belizean women turned the resort into a small market of meaning. Every purchase became a gift to the recipient, to the maker, and to the broader community of women entrepreneurs lifting each other up in Belize.

The Atmosphere: Peaceful, Pleasant, Present

If you ask anyone who was there on Sunday what they remember most, the answer usually isn't a single moment. It's the feeling.

There was no rush. No performance. No noise for the sake of noise. Just women being celebrated, exactly as they are. Mother's enjoying the beach. Daughters watching their mothers laugh in a way they hadn't seen in months. Friends reconnecting over Madafaya-spiced bites. Strangers walking away with a Juanita's handmade keepsake tucked carefully into their bags.

A Continuing Tradition at Bullock Island

Mother's Day at Bullock Island is not a one-time event. It is a returning promise. Each year, the resort opens its arms to the women in the community: locals, neighbors, friends of friends, to say one simple thing: thank you. Thank you for raising us. Thank you for feeding us. Thank you for holding entire families together with hands that rarely get to rest.

This is what Bullock Island means when it talks about hospitality. It isn't just about welcoming guests from around the world. It is about welcoming the women right here at home, first.
